The value of cycles, many costing four figures and more, and the ease in which they can be stolen and resold have contributed to a year on year increase across the UK.
The British Crime Survey 2008/9 recorded an increase of 22% from the previous 12 months - 540,000, up from 444,000. Disturbingly, the survey suggests that only 38% of bicycle thefts were reported to the police.
